PRINCIPLE-BASED APPLICATION
Redken Principles are the foundation of everything we teach and are at the heart of our commitment to help salon professionals learn, earn and live better.
Redken principle-based applications use a common language so they can be universally understood
When we analyze a hair shaft, we realize that the longer the hair, the more textures and conditions we must consider when choosing our haircolor product, formulation and application method. Redken calls each of these areas a zone.
There are 3 Zones to the hair shaft:
1. Zone 1 is the scalp area
2. Zone 2 is the aged hair, possibly color-treated
3. Zone 3 is the over-porous hair. Not everyone has a Zone 3.
Zones are the first principle to consider when formulating and choosing your application technique

To maintain the integrity of the hair, Redken recommends using Shades EQ to refresh hair that’s been permanently colored. Discover what makes Shades EQ the perfect choice for all your clients' needs.
Apply the haircolor formula to Zone 1 only, using the same application in the Modern Virgin Application.
When we do a retouch to Zone 1—the regrowth area—we’re left with Zone 2 and possibly Zone 3 to work with.
Redken recommends “refreshing” Zones 2 and 3 with Shades EQ Gloss or Cream.

Sectioning is the key to every haircolor technique. It keeps you organized, gives you a road map to follow and helps keep the application neat. Redken shows you how following the head form will give you customized results every time.
When sectioning, follow the head form for natural reference points.
Since the head form is a sphere and not a square shape, we need to define areas on the head as they change from one area to the next. The points where they change are called reference points and represent changes of direction.
Use reference points to section any head shape and create or re-create results, whatever application method or technique you choose.
